CBI raids Andhra hospitals, seizes fake drugs

The CBI has found expired medicines and stocks of spurious drugs during the surprise searches it conducted on 20 Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) dispensaries and other hospitals at Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Bangalore cities, a senior official said on Thursday.

The CBI, which conducted a special drive from May 12 to May 19, following complaints by public on the quality of medicines available at CGHS and other hospitals, seized expired medicines as well as spurious drugs, CBI DIG VV Laxminarayana told reporters in Hyderabad.

"Samples of (expired and spurious drugs) have been collected with the help of Drug Inspectors and the same have been dispatched for analysis to laboratories. Once the report on the quality of these medicines will come out we will proceed with further action," Laxminarayana said.

The possibility of patients being given expired drugs cannot be ruled out, he said.

In Hyderabad, joint surprise checks were carried out in the CGHS Dispensaries located at Begumpet, Alwal, Tarnaka, Secunderabad, Dilsukhnagar, Kanchanbagh, Charminar, Kakatiya Nagar and Government Medical depot at SR Nagar besides checks were also carried out at the Railway Hospital and ESI Hospitals at Nacharam and Sanathnagar.

Checks were also carried out at different hospitals in Visakhapatnam and Bangalore cities under the Hyderabad Zone of CBI, he said.

Laxminarayana further said senior CBI officials would be visiting districts across Andhra Pradesh from June and camp for two-days in each district and interact with local people and collect complaints if they have any against the public servants of Central Government Departments.

The CBI official said three additional courts of Special Judges under the Prevention of Corruption Act will be set up in Hyderabad and two in Visakhapatnam, which will be created as part of 71 courts being set up across the country in order to reduce pendency of under trial cases.

He said 241 cases of CBI Hyderabad branch and 164 of Visakhapatnam branch were pending for trial
