Babus retirement age set to go up

Babus retirement age set to go up

The top two officials in the state administration, chief secretary, Mr S.V. Prasad, and the director-general of police, Mr K. Aravinda Rao, will benefit from the Centre’s decision to set the retirement age for civil servants at 62 years from the present 60 years. Mr Aravinda Rao was due to retire in June and the chief secretary in September.

Sources told this newspaper that the Cabinet subcommittee of the Union government gave its nod for enhancing the retirement age, and orders amending the service rules are expected much before the retirement of the two officials. The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, was keen to enhance the retirement age of bureaucrats.

Sources said that though the proposal is ready for implementation, there will be a few months’ delay because the government wants to make Mr Pulok Chatterjee the new Cabinet secretary at the Centre and prefers to wait for bureaucrats senior to him to retire before it makes the announcement.

Mr Chatterjee had earlier worked with the UPA chairperson, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, and is considered a natural choice to take over from the incumbent Mr K.M. Chandrasekhar. “There are a few bureaucrats senior to Mr Chatterjee and the Centre will wait for their retirement in April,” explained a senior official.

Back here in the state, the government will be keen to retain the services of Mr Prasad and Mr Aravinda Rao who have proved to be assets when the state is passing through turbulent times. The former chief minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, appointed the two officials to the top posts and his successor Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy did not make any changes. Another senior bureaucrat, Ms Janaki Kondapi, will also benefit from the change in the new retirement age as she is due for retirement in the next few months.

It is not clear whether extended date of retirement ie 62 will be applicable to whom? To all central govt servants OR only to IAS/IPS. What this "babus/civil servants " includes?

what armed forces? Is it in pipeline?
IT IS MISUSE OF POWER INTENTIONALLY DELAYING TO IMPLEMENT A DECISION TO DO FAVOUR TO THEIR BELOVED ONES OR FRIENDS. IN A WAY THIS CORRUPTION.
THERE IS NO NEED FOR ENHANCING RETIREMENT AGE. TOP EXECUTIVES OF MULTINATIONALS ARE YOUNG PROFESSIONALS ONLY. WE HAVE PLENTY OF YOUNG IAS OFFICERS WHO COULD MAKE IT BIG. IF SOME ONE MAKES THIS NEWS AS THE BASIS FOR PUBLIC INTEREST LITIGATION ON THE DELAY TO FAVOUR SOME ONE, THEN THE GOVT WILL BE IN DOLDRUMS.
delaying a decision to favour some body is also corruption, misuse of power, if any one files public interest petition on this issue taking this report as evidence, then the government will be answerable-sabapathi

Why do we need an increase in retirement age of the employees of Central Government? An increase in Retirement age of the CG employees would have the following effects:

A. Increase the average of the CG Employees ( Since there are allegations about slow movement of files in various departments).

B. Avenues for unemployed youth in the CG service would shrink down at least for two years.

C. Barring a few cases CG services are mostly guided by rules and guidelines as issued by the appropriate authorities from time to time. Hence there remains very limited scope to apply research and knowledge addition like professors in Colleges and Universities. So it would create frustration among official in the pipeline, who could contribute better on given opportunity.

D. Technology is the thumb rule of the day. The primary objective CG services are to serve the target section of public in a better way. In most of the cases senior servants ( With due respect) are in the back seat, as far as quick adoption of technology id concerned. This put unnecessary breaks in the overall process of development and implementation of programs at the desired level.

Of course the points made above are not beyond debate, but logically acceptable and convincing.

This is really a very Harsh decision. The Officers who are willing to take this decision should travel by mumbai local trains for just fifteen days during peak hours then should take the decision.
This decision is really misuse of their powers.
What about the anomaly in pension between Majors and Lt. cols. There is everything for the Babus, one rank one pension, increase in retirement age, but sorting pension anomaly of Majors and Lt.Cols is still to happen.

Retirement age of Central Government employees should not be increased in the interest of the lakhs and lakhs of unemployed youths who are becoming frustrated for not getting a job during their "age limit". The Government is committed as per election manifesto to create at least five million jobs per year, how do they achieve this by enhancing the retirement age? The unemployed youths could then turn into unlawful activities. "Idle mind is devil's workshop"

1. Will the two years delay in retirements will serve the purpose of financial management for ever?

2. Will the buerocrats like to retire after the age of 62 years?
