Retirement Age of Central Government Employees Controversy Begins Again

“Retirement age for Central Government employees is 60 years now. It was raised to 60 from 58 in 1998(Dopt order), when the then NDA Government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee”

Last year, there were rumours that the centre was planning to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62. This time, retirement age makes headlines one again that the superannuation age may be decreased to 58.

Last week the most popular website for CG Employees, www.gservants.com has published an article about the recommendations of 7th CPC, as unconfirmed news. In this, 7th CPC may recommend for reduce in age of retirement of CG Employees will be in two criteria. The retirement age as the completion of 33 years of service, or at the age of 60, whichever comes first. The panic was further increased by similar claims on Facebook and Whatsapp also, because the criteria for retirement as at the age of 58 or completion of 33 years.

If an employee joins central government services at the age of 27, he would complete 33 years of service at the age of 60. If he had joined the services before the age of 27, his position becomes tricky. If someone joins the central government services soon after graduation, at the age of 20, he will be forced to retire at the age of 53.

On the internet, this condition was distorted as 33 years of service or 58 years of age, whichever comes first. This caused great worry to all because the 60/33 rule would affect only those who had joined the service before the age of 26, but the 58/33 rule would lead to all those who had joined after the age of 28 to lose two years of service. Also worth noticing is the fact that the service period is very short in such cases.

Nobody is sure yet if the 7th Pay Commission will include the recommendations on retirement age in its report to the government. But, discussions were held on this issue. There is no information about when the decision will be implemented.

Before May 1998 – 58 Years
After May 1998 – 60 Years and …!

Reducing 60 to 58 is like ‘losing the sword and growing the tail.’

In view of the large scale unemployment this will be a good move. The government can provide employment to large no of youngsters.

BJP is always against central govt employees creating some hearteches . When NTR was CM of AP he reduced age of superannuation n many senior employees died of heart attack. Employees filed a suit n they have won n NTR PAID 2yr salaries. PM must not get bad name from kids of govt employees

Retirement criteria of 60 years or 33 yrs of service, whichever is earlier, is illogical. Minimum age limit for entry into govt service being 18 years, if a person joins government service at the age of 18-19, should he retire when he is just 51-52?!

Whether getting a job earlier is a sin? While reading this report it sounds so.

retirement of a govt employee is no doubt is a matter of great comfort
but at the same time after a passage of years gradually one feels himself alone and having no importance in society. it being my personal experience though i am fully satisfied at the same time i want to work in govt offices only to gain confidence and enhance activity not with a view to earn. i will appreciate if retirement age is reduced but some via media be considered on above lines at least for ministrial staff. s k mudgal dy chief auditor /rtd.

33 YEARS SERVICE OR 60 YEARS IS CERTAINLY LOGICAL AND A GOOD SUGGESTION. ALL ARE GETTING AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY IN GOVT SERVICE AND AT THE SAME TIME IT WILL BE A BIG RELIEF TO THE CORES OF UN EMPLOYED EDUCATED YOUTH WHO ARE IN THE QUE.THIS SUGGESTION IT IMPLEMENTED WOULD BE A LANDMARK PROGRESSIVE DECISION OF THE PRESENT GOVT AT A TIME EVEN WHEN SKILLED UNEMPLOYMENT IS IN THE INCREASING VERGE. IT IS A FOOLISH IDEA TO KEEP PHYSICAL WORK FORCE AFTER THE AGE OF 55. DESPITE THE FACT THAT I MYSELF WILL LOOSE FIVE YEARS SERVICE I WHOLEHEARTEDLY WELCOME THE SUGGESTION.

This is a great move towards the fulfillment of India in all the ways.

One thing is sure after earning 33 years government salary with little dissatisfaction one must go and paving the way for another unemployed youth.
This opportunity will come for the retiring government employee son / daughter also.
As per my knowledge this is a the terrific idea and kudos for idea of dynamic persons in 7th pay commission.

No doubt , the proposal of retirement after 33 years or attaining 60 years of age will cause a lot of heartburn to many, at the same time, it would create lot of job opportunities for the younger generation. If implemented it would cause lot of financial problems for many who have not been able to manage their financial matters and wouldn't have much time to put their house in order. What the government should do is to introduce separate higher pay structure who are retiring say within 10 years from now on so that they are not put to hardship.

Regarding retirement age govt should analysis about the matter. People those they have joined before the age 25 they should retire at the age 52/53. Govt will loss a skilled, experienced officer /supervisor and those they should retire very difficult in their part to survive and maintain their family. So government should not touch this issue will be better. Other wise one day agitation will stand against this.

IT IS NOT GOOD TO REDUCE THE AGE LIMIT BY INDIRECT METHOD I E EITHER 33 YEARS OF SERVICE OR 60 YEARS OF AGE.IT CAN GIVE HEART ATTACKS TO THOSE WHO MIGHT HAVE PLANNED FOR THEIR KIDS AND OF COURSE FOR THEMSELVES.AS IN THE MODERN TIMES THE LIFE EXPECTENCY IS MORE THAT IT USED TO HAVE IN 70S OR BEFORE. TO MY SUGGESTION ONE CAN SERVE VERY WELL UPTO AGE OF 65 WHEN A POLITICIAN CAN SERVE THE HUGE NATION UPTO UNLIMITED AGE THEN HOW DISCREMNATION WITH POOR EMPLOYEES.

IF THE GOVT DOES NOT UNDERSTAND THIS AT LEAST THEY CAN KEEP IT UNTOUCHED.
